By: Dr. Asha S Vijay, Medical Director, GarbhaGudi IVF Center.
Male infertility is alarmingly increasing all over the globe. This could be attributed to the ever increasing use of addictive substances, high EMF exposure, ever increasing stress & anxiety, the alarming increase in the incidence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, psychiatric disorders, cancers & autoimmune disorders. It could also be due to increasing obesity, sexual dysfunctions & inadvertent usage of chemicals on the body.
So, lifestyle plays a very important role in reversing the changes in semen count, motility & morphology of sperms.
Having a healthy lifestyle like having a very regular exercise regime, having timely nutritious food, drinking lot of fresh water, having good 6-8 hrs sleep, handling stress & anxiety in a creative way rather than resorting to anti-anxiety medications is very very important.
Also getting rid of addictions like smoking, tobacco consumption, alcohol & other opioid analgesics is very beneficial.
Removing oneself from occupational exposure to harmful substances like chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, paints, dyes, anilene exposure, heated environments like in foundries, catering industry, jewellers, automobile industry is also important as increase in Scrotal temperature is harmful for active & viable sperms. Control of BP & sugar levels is very important for sperm functionality.
Diabetes affects the count, motility & morphology of the sperm. So, strict sugar control is a must. Certain antihypertensive like calcium blockers, beta blockers, angiotensin inhibitors affect the sexuality & sperm parameters. So, proper physician advice is a must if the couple is trying for a baby. Prolong use of steroids & hormone supplements like testosterone especially in body builders is very harmful for sperm functions. So stopping the above drugs is important for reversal of semen abnormalities.
Adopting the age old, evergreen system of our land, yoga & pranayama can do wonders in a person who is getting treated for male infertility; because yoga & pranayama treats the person holistically, healing both mind & the body.
When the couple is on treatment for either IUI/OI-TI/ or IVF/ICSI the male partner should resort to good lifestyle changes as mentioned above & also take good antioxidants for 90 days or more so that the sperms available for fertilization improves in all the parameters.
Healthy gametes lead to healthy offspring.
